Kendra Arnold, Executive Director of the Foundation for Accountability and Civic Trust (FACT), issued the following statement in response to the shutdown of the New Georgia Project which was founded by Stacy Abrams in 2013 and later chaired by Senator Raphael Warnock (D-GA):
“The shutdown of the New Georgia Project is a fitting end to an organization that had a history of not following Georgia’s election laws. The fact that its end comes shortly after having the largest fine in state history levied against it by the Georgia Ethics Commission stands as an important example of consequences for breaking the law.
In that same spirit, it must be noted that just as we filed against New Georgia Project, FACT recently filed a complaint with the IRS against another Abrams-related organization, Fair Fight Action, and have called for the IRS to revoke this group’s tax-exempt status. This group also has a history of engaging in activity that appears to be political, including spending more than $20 million for an election lawsuit essentially on Abrams’ behalf.
Accountability is imperative to maintain the public's trust in our political system and, just as the Georgia Ethics Commission acted against the New Georgia Project, we hope the IRS will also follow suit in the Fair Fight Action case.”
