Following FACT’s complaint on this matter filed with the Office of Congressional Conduct last year, Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick has been found guilty in the ethics trial against her.
Generally speaking, holding a public trial was a step in the right direction to improve transparency and accountability for members of Congress—this should be the standard not just in this case, but in others going forward. Our pubic officials need to be held to a high standard. Congress has held multiple public hearings seeking answers from state officials regarding the billions of dollars in alleged fraud at the state-level. For Congress to shield its own Members from similar public scrutiny would reek of the kind of untouchable, ruling-class elitism our Founders fought against more than 250 years ago. The fact this is the first public ethics hearing in 16 years is absurd. More public ethics hearings for violations great and small would go a long way to restoring American's faith and trust in their elected officials.
