MN Rep. Illegally Using Official Twitter Acct to Campaign for DNC Chair
Today, FACT filed a complaint today with the Office of Congressional Ethics against U.S. Representative Keith Ellison (D-MN) for improperly using his official House Twitter account to campaign for Chairman of the Democratic National Committee (DNC).
On numerous occasions, Congressman Ellison has been using his official House Twitter account to promote his candidacy for DNC Chair. According to the complaint, his posts “have included nearly every type of explicitly prohibited content-campaign and political information, links to his campaign website and advocacy for grassroots organizing and his positions.”
“What’s most disturbing about Congressman Ellison’s egregious behavior is that he clearly knows the rules, as he maintains a separate Twitter account to run for DNC Chair,” said Matthew Whitaker, Executive Director, Foundation for Accountability and Civic Trust. “The ban on using official taxpayer resources for politics exist to ensure public confidence that elected representatives are working for the citizens and not for their own personal gain,” Whitaker added.
According to the rules, Members of Congress cannot use any official resource, including their official constituent facing website and social media accounts, for campaign or political purposes of any kind. This includes personal, political or campaign information and any information that lobbies or solicits support for a Member’s position on legislative issues.
