FACT Requests Investigation into House of Rep. Candidate LuAnn Bennett
Updated: Mar 19, 2019
Today, FACT asked the Government of the District of Columbia to investigate whether, over the past couple of years, House of Representatives Candidate LuAnn Bennett failed to pay D.C. taxes as required by law.
Bennett is a D.C. real estate executive who publicly stated that she lived in D.C. for at least April 2014 to December 2015. In February 2014, Bennett purchased a D.C. home and in April 2014, announced on social media that she moved to Washington D.C. Although she did own an estate in Fauquier County Virginia, her personal financial disclosure stated that she received rental payments for the Virginia property in 2015, indicating that her residence was her D.C. home and not her Virginia property.
The law requires that anyone who lives in D.C. for more than one-half of the year pay D.C. taxes. Although the facts indicate that she was a D.C. resident, when she was questioned about her residence and tax payments, she indicated she only paid Virginia taxes. Specifically, when asked if she paid D.C. or Virginia taxes, Bennett answered "Virginia, always, for 35 years."
In spite of the facts that show Bennett was a resident of D.C., her own statements indicate that she did not pay D.C. taxes. FACT has asked the D.C. Office of Tax and Revenue to investigate.
